Washington, D.C.

National Cherry Blossom Festival
March 20 – April 12, 2026
Projected peak bloom: March 29 – April 1, 2026 (weather dependent)

Washington, D.C. is the first major stop for cherry blossom season, and the city’s most iconic bloom views can be found around the Tidal Basin. According to the National Park Service, peak bloom is projected for March 29 through April 1 this year, though weather can still affect timing.

Key Events:

• March 28 – Blossom Kite Festival, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Washington Monument Grounds
• April 4 – Petalpalooza, 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, free event with a rain date of April 5
• April 11 – National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM, with free public viewing and optional reserved seating

Know before you go: Some walkways in the Tidal Basin restoration zone between the Jefferson Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial remain closed during bloom season, though alternate routes are available and the full loop around the Tidal Basin remains accessible.

Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival

Philadelphia’s cherry blossom season overlaps with festival weekend, making late March through early April a great time to visit. Sakura Weekend takes place in West Fairmount Park, centered around the Horticulture Center and Centennial Arboretum, where visitors can enjoy blooms, cultural programming, and festival activities.

Key Events:

• March 28 – 29 – Sakura Weekend, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM both days

Know before you go: Festival programming during Sakura Weekend is ticketed, and some activities use timed entry. However, general outdoor blossom viewing near the Horticulture Center does not require a ticket. Shofuso is nearby, but Sakura Weekend programming does not take place inside Shofuso itself.

Good to know: The festival is rain or shine. Dogs are allowed on the Horticulture Center grounds if they are on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and alcohol is only permitted in designated beer garden areas.

Newark, NJ

Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival at Branch Brook Park
April 4 – April 19, 2026
Forecast optimal viewing: April 9 – April 16, 2026 (subject to weather)

Newark rounds out the season with one of the most impressive displays in the country. Branch Brook Park is home to the largest and most varied collection of Japanese flowering cherry trees in the United States, with more than 5,300 trees across 18 varieties.

  This is the best window for travelers hoping to pair festival energy with the National Park Service’s projected peak bloom period. March 28 is especially appealing for the Blossom Kite Festival, though peak bloom is currently projected to begin just after that.
• Late March – Early April: Philadelphia, PA
  Philadelphia’s bloom timing can vary with the weather, but the best viewing is expected between the last week of March and the first week of April. Festival weekend on March 28 and 29 is a great option if you want events and blossoms in the same trip.
• April 9 – April 16: Newark, NJ
